Bowl for Kids Sake works Once again the FWDG's teamed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana at its annual Bowl for Kids' Sake. Team Pink raised $330 Sunday February 8, 2009 at Pro Bowl West. It takes $1000 per child to host for a year at Big Brothers Big Sisters. We are thankful to be a part of such a wonderful event.

On December 7, 2008, we hosted a charity bout to benefit Snarles Manson, a former FWDG skater who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana On October 28, 2008, we presented Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana with a check for $4,500, which was raised at our Bust A Move Event October 2.
Habitat for Humanity's Women Build On Saturday, August 16, we presented Habitat for Humanity's Women build a check for $500 to supports its upcoming Women Build project. The Women Build project is a construction project conducted by women only. Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is one of 2,322 affiliates worldwide working at a grass-roots level to eliminate poverty housing. Contributed funds buy building materials, and donated labor builds new homes or sometimes rehabilitates existing ones. These homes are then sold at no profit and no interest to partner families. Fort Wayne Women's Bureau- Walk a Mile in her Shoes On Saturday, July 19, 2008, we presented the Fort Wayne Women's Bureau a check for $500 to support its Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Event. The Walk will take place September 6, 2008, at Headwaters Park. There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. WHY? To get the community talking and to put an end to rape. For more information, click HERE.
Allen County Council on Aging On June 10, 2008, we partnered with Don Hall's and 101.7 WLDE to raise money for the Allen County Council on Aging by hosting a Derby Girls Diner day at the Hall's location at the corner of Lima and Coliseum Blvd. A portion of the sales of special BustHER platters was donated to the charity. The Derby Girls were on hand with the penalty wheel, merch and games. For more information about the Allen County Council on Aging, click HERE. Black Pine Animal Park Proceeds from our 2nd Home Bout of the 3rd Season, on May 17, 2008, were donated to Black Pine Animal Park. Black Pine Animal Park in Albion, Indiana is a non-profit exotic animal sanctuary, a "last chance" refuge for animals in need. It exists to give rescued and retired exotic animals a safe haven, and to educate people and enhance their knowledge of exotic and endangered species, and responsible pet ownership. The Lapper- Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana On Saturday, April 26, 2008 we raised $275 for Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana and participated in its 6th Annual Lapper, a walk to support all those affected by cancer in northeast Indiana. It was an opportunity to participate in a walk - up to twenty miles - that pushes people past their comfort zone, just as people with cancer do every day. For more information about Cancer Services, click HERE. Tapestry: A Day for Women Tapestry weaves threads of renewal and self-growth for women of all ages. Hear the stories, experience the laughter, challenge yourself to grow, and find your thread in the tapestry designed to entertain and inspire. We partnered with Tapestry 2008 on Friday, April 25, 2008 by volunteering for the day's events and donating gifts for the gift bags. The event feature keynote speaker Marie Osmond and raised money to pay for a full year of college tuition for two young women in our community. Hoosier Burn Cam At our first home bout of our 3rd season on April 19, 2008, we donated $750 to Hoosier Burn Camp. We also partnered with Mad Anthony's to raise money for Hoosier Burn Camp by selling paper skates at its Broadway and Taylor location. When a child sustains a burn injury, their life is changed forever. HBC, founded in 1997, was started to provide peer support for these children. Summer camp is a special experience for all children, but HBC combines the “good old fashion fun of summer camp” with the life skills kids need to fully recover from a serious trauma of burn injuries. The cost to send one child to camp is $1000.00 per week. Our donation will help defray some of the cost to operate HBC.
Bowl for Kids' Sake We were out in full force this week to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana at its annual Bowl for Kids' Sake. Two teams ventured out on Sunday, March 9 to Georgetown Bowl and two teams headed to Crazy Pins on March 12. For more information about Bowl for Kids' Sake, click HERE.
Front Row: Last Call and Mayhem HelpTequila.com Proceeds from our 50/50 raffle during our Fall Brawl Roller Derby Tournament on November 24, 2007 were donated to Tequila Mockingbird. The raffle helped raise over $500 for the Windy City Roller who sustained spinal cord injuries during a home bout on August 25. For more information, visit www.helptequila.com. Brenda Hancher Foundation On November 8, 2007 we participated in "The Flavor of Fall," a fundraiser for the Brenda Hanchar Foundation, by cooking a pot of White Lightening Chilli and serving it to guests at Baker Street Station. Local restaurants, business owners and doctors also participated in the event. The Brenda Hanchar Foundation Inc. was established to improve and maintain the quality of life by providing the necessary medical equipment, medical supplies and prescription medication assistance at low or no cost to sustain life for residents in Northeast Indiana. It is the mission of The Brenda Hanchar Foundation to help those who are unable to afford physician directed medical equipment, medical supplies or prescription medication to enhance and maintain a reasonable quality of life.

Great Lakes Burn Camp Last September, we donated $2,000 to the Great Lakes Burn camp, which helped send four kids to camp. On August 20, 2007, a handful of us headed up to Michigan to visit the children at the camp. We explained roller derby to the them and then put on a mock bout. We also staged some falls and pushes for them and they loved it. Then we got the kids and staff involved with push races against each other. At the end, the camp presented us with a crystal plaque/award for our help with sending some kids to the camp.
Erin's House On August 11, 2007, we presented a $500 check to Erin's House during the intermission between the first and second periods of our bout. The philosophy of Erin's House is that every child's grief is unique. The center allows children, teens and young adults to choose their own path for grieving with the support of their peers and caring adults. The services provided are facilitated, peer support groups by age range (3-5, 6-9, 10-13, teens and young adults). Parents and/or caregivers are also welcome to participate in adult peer support groups. Meetings are held twice a month and are of no cost to families.
Easter Seals ARC of Northeast Indiana Proceeds from our bout on July 21, 2007 were donated to Easter Seals ARC. A check for $850 was presented to the charity at the intermission between the first and second periods.. Easter Seals Arc of Northeast Indiana celebrates over 50 years of providing services to children and adults with disabilities and other special needs, and support to their families. What is now Easter Seals Arc began as Johnny Appleseed School in 1954 with a small group of Fort Wayne parents who held a dream for their children with developmental disabilities. That dream included education, skill training, recreation, integration and support that would enable their children to live within the community at the level of independence of their choice. Now over 50 years later, the same basic principles and philosophy remain at the core of its ever-growing list of services. Its affiliation with both Easter Seals and The Arc empower it to provide the highest quality of services and resources for children and adults with a wide range of disabilities. SCAN Duck Race At our bout on May 19, 2007, we raised money to support the SCAN Duck Race, which took place at Johnny Appleseed Park on June 23, 2007. SCAN (Stop Child Abuse & Neglect) has been working quietly and effectively to prevent child abuse and neglect in our community since 1974. SCAN's mission is to prevent child abuse and neglect through direct service, education, coordination and advocacy. SCAN's vision is to be available to every parent and all caregivers of children in northeast Indiana, keeping children safe from abuse and neglect and strengthening families. Turnstone Center for Disabled Children and Adults Proceeds from our bout on June 16, 2007 were donated to Turnstone Center for Disabled Children and Adults. During the second intermission, we presented the staff with a check for $1,300. Turnstone is an integral provider of therapeutic, recreational, educational and support services to persons with disabilities and their families in Allen County and northeast Indiana. Governed by a dynamic board of community volunteers and a highly trained staff of caring professionals, the agency's reputation is that of compassion, commitment and mission driven. Its mission is "To enhance the lives of all persons with physical disabilities and their familes."
Parkview's Bike Helmet Program We were on hand to help promote bicycle helmet safety at a bike rodeo coordinated by Parkview Hospital Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center on June 9, 2007. The children were fitted for a free bicycle helmet. After receiving their helmets, kids listened to a brief educational presentation and then completed a fun rodeo obstacle course where they practiced safe riding skills. Cystic Fibrosis Foundation On May 12, 2007, we participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides walk. Collectively, we raised $2,400 and we will present the organization with a check at our first home bout of the season on May 19. The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a nonprofit donor-supported organization, is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. The Foundation is the leading organization in the United States devoted to cystic fibrosis. It has more than 80 chapters and offices nationwide and supports a network of more than 115 accredited CF care centers, which provide patients and families with vital treatment and other CF resources. Victim's Assistance Program Proceeds from our bout on April 21, 2007 benefitted the Victim's Assistance program, a program offered through the Fort Wayne Police Department. Victims Assistance provides information, guidance and emotional support for people who have been victimized by crime. They offer crisis counseling, information and referrals, criminal justice system orientation, case status information, client advocacy and community education all at no charge, along with a strong commitment to provide Internships and Practicum experiences to College students.
IPFW Child Care Center We donated bout tickets and merchandise to the IPFW Child Care Center for its 2007 Silent Auction. The goal of the IPFW Child Care Center is to provide: a warm, loving environment where children feel accepted, safe, and secure; an enriched and positive environment in which children may grow socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively; an environment where children participate in active learning; an anti-bias curriculum with a multicultural approach; an environment rich in language, where children are encouraged to express themselves, are listened to, and responded to by the caregivers; an environment where children are free to make choices based on their interests; and an attitude of cooperation in working with parents in the care and nurturing of their children. Make A Wish Foundation On March 22 and 23, 2006, we participated in 92.3 The Fort's Make a Wish Request-a-thon. We helped answer phones and solicited donations on air with Uncle Cliff and Elvis & Hammer. The two-day event helped raise over $13,000 (which is equivalent to two wishes) for this area's chapter of the Make A Wish Foundation. Sexual Assault Treatment Center We presented a check for $2,000 to the Sexual Assault Treatment Center during intermission at our Jan 6, 2007 bout vs. the Gem City Rollergirls from Dayton, OH. The SATC's mission is "The most respected and trusted resource for superior medical forensic care, education and research in bringing justice to those impacted by sexual assault." Fraternal Order of Police's Forgotten Families Program All proceeds from our fundraising event with Homeless J on December 21, 2006 at Columbia Street benefit the Forgotten Families Program. Over $200 was raised for this charity. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us and thanks to Homeless J for allowing us to be a part of your show. Scott's Cancer Day- Wednesday, October 4th We joined Scott's on October 4, 2006 for its annual Cancer Day. A percentage of the proceeds on all purchases went to the American Cancer Society. The girls bagged groceries at the Scott's on Stellhorn from 5 to 7 pm. Thanks to everyone who came out to support Scott's and the FW Derby Girls and help raise money for the American Cancer Society. Crossroad Children's Home We presented a check for $2,000 to Crossroad Children's Home after our final 2006 Exhibition Season Bout. Crossroad Children's Home is a not-for-profit treatment center for emotionally troubled youth. It is located in Fort Wayne on a 48-acre campus on Lake Avenue. Founded in 1883 as "The Reformed Orphans Home of Fort Wayne, Indiana" by the Reformed Church, today, it employs over 150 counselors, teachers, therapists, housekeepers, cooks, groundskeepers, chaplains, nurses and others. Many Children, either because of who they are or because of what's happened to them, have emotional and behavioral difficulties. Crossroad is where they get help, healing and hope. Children who come to Crossroad learn to value themselves and others. Values provide the solid ground the children needs as they learn, change and become "valuable" adults. For decades, judges, educators, social service professionals and parents have turned to Crossroad for help with troubled children. Crossroad has become the rock of certainty for its children and for thos who love and care about them.
Great Lakes Burn Camp We presented a check for $2000 to the Great Lakes Burn Camp on Thursday September 14, 2006. The Great Lakes Burn Camp, located in Jackson Michigan, is a special place for kids ages 7-17 to meet, heal, grow and support other burn survivors. Kids share their stories and bond with other kids in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Unconditional love and acceptance is only part of what each camper receives at Great Lakes Burn Camp. They strive to remove all barriers that may keep children from participating in events and activities. Campers also receive well-balanced meals and 24-hour medical supervision. Dressing changes, physical therapy or other special medical services are managed by the camp nurse. Transportation to and from camp is provided. Opportunities for burn survivors are made possible through generous financial and material donations and services provided by businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the nation. Junior Achivement of Northern Indiana We are proud to support JA and we joined them on July 15, 2006 for the JA Grand Prix. Congratulations to those girls who placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the Derby Prix: Boomerang, Shannon, and Jenni. Junior Achievement uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, Junior Achievement brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential.. Morgan Taylor Our Ultrazone Event helped us raise $400 for Morgan Taylor. Morgan is a 5 year old girl from Fort Wayne. Recently, she was involved in a lawn mowing accident and lost one foot and several toes on her other foot. We are honored to be able to donate our fundraising money to Morgan and her family. Charis House We are proud to donate to charities that benefit local women and children. We're happy to announce that $2,000 was presented to Charis House, the women and children's division of Fort Wayne Rescue Ministries, on June 8, 2006. All proceeds donated to Charis House were raised at Apocalypse POW, our first bout held on May 20, 2006.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana We joined the Big Brother Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana at its annual Bowl for Kids Sake. Bowl for Kids Sake is designed to assist in building awareness for the agency and to raise money that directly benefits the children in the program. The 2006 goal is to raise $150,000, which will support 150 new matches. Bowl for Kids Sake also helps create the foundation of our children’s future by giving them a few of life’s “magic moments.” |
