Lucky Harmers (38) vs. Smokin' Guns (65)

Our two home teams, the Smokin' Guns and Lucky Harmers, met on the track for the third time this season at the PLEX on Saturday, July 19. Both teams headed into the bout down several seasoned skaters, so it would be up to the rookie skaters to step up- and did they ever!

Before the game even started, derby fans and skaters alike experienced a first for the league- the power went out just after the Guns' intro and before the Harmers took the floor. Doused in complete darkness, the PLEX and FWDG staff scrambled to recover power, but it stayed off for the next 45 minutes. Thanks to some quick thinking by the visiting national guardsmen, we rigged up some makeshift lighting and started the bout. Much to everyone's surprise, all of our fans stayed through the power outage and were possibly the loudest we'd ever heard, as they cheered when the skaters took the floor.

Both teams came out strong in the first period, putting point for point on the board for much of the first period. The Guns lept ahead ten minutes in, only to see their lead dwindle when Foxy Trotsy got sent to the box and RIPtide was able to put up 11 unanswered points. At half time, the Guns led by 4 points.

Things stayed pretty even at the start of the second period until both Ruby Killer and Enya Grave put up several rounds of big scores, as the Harmers' jammers struggled for points. Skating unopposed, Enya put up 11 points to seal a lead for the Guns' that propelled them to their second win of the season.
